DIGICEL SOLAR PANEL BUS STOPS LIGHTS UP BARBADOS
Friday, January 13, 2012 - (Bridgetown, Barbados): – Digicel’s has taken its Go Green initiative to the streets with the support of solar powered bus stops across Barbados.
The participation in Adopt-A-Stop’s project started in Oistins, but has since spread to other high traffic areas such as Belleville, Eagle Hall junction, Bridgetown near the public library and Bank Hall.
The bus stops which conserves energy since it does not use electricity from the grid, is also partially constructed from recycled material, which endorses the three pillars of Digicel’s Go Green mandate – reuse, recycle and reduce.
The telecommunication’s Commercial Director, Alex Tasker explained that since the launch of its Go Green mandate, Digicel has sought to spread the message to the communities.
“Just recently, we donated funds to the Child Care Board from our ongoing project of recycling of old handsets and chargers. And we will continue to adopt and promote initiatives which preserves our environment like the solar panel bus stops”, he stated.
Project co-ordinator of Adopt-A-Stop, Barney Gibbs indicated that he was pleased to have Digicel’s support from the inception of the project.
“Solar lighting places the shelters on the cutting edge of Barbados’ alternative energy movement, giving sponsors high visibility during the night, and improving commuter safety. As an early supporter of this initiative, Digicel is one of the companies helping us to blaze a green trail”, Gibbs explained.
Digicel recognizes its responsibility regarding the preservation of its environment, and has therefore implemented Go Green Initiatives in the most of its markets across the Caribbean, Central America and the Pacific.
