DIGICEL AND CUSTOMERS ASSIST NIGHTENGALE HOME THROUGH THE GO GREEN PROJECT
Tuesday, November 15, 2011 - Bridgetown, Barbados: DIGICEL and its customers have lent a helping hand to the Nightengale Children's Home through one of the company’s Go Green Projects.
The mobile telecommunications company recently presented a cheque to the home with proceeds from its ongoing environmental “Be the Solution and Make a Difference' campaign.
Marquita Sugrim, Digicel's marketing executive explained that the campaign was launched a few months ago and encourages customers to recycle their old cell phones and chargers in specially marked bins throughout its retail channel.
“The response from our customers was overwhelming and the campaign was a huge success as a result of our partnership. The old phones and charges were sent to a recycling plant and all of the proceeds Digicel received were donated to the Nightengale Children’s Home.
Members of our Go Green team also shared some of the company’s green initiatives with the House Mothers responsible for all of the children’s homes across the island”, Sugrim explained.
She added that the House Mothers will implement some of the Go Green initiatives in the children’s homes, and also teach the children how to care and preserve the environment.
Director of the Child Care Board, Joan Crawford, thanked Digicel for the assistance noting: "This is truly a good example of being your brother's keeper. Not only is Digicel encouraging its customers to be environmentally friendly, but it is also looking out for and remembering our children as part of its community outreach programme.
"It is important for corporate entities to work with organisations such as ours because these children are also a part of our society, they are our future and some of them will be our future leaders and so we want to thank Digicel for always remembering us."
Crawford noted that the funds would be used to assist with a new remedial programme the Board is about to start and a few other ongoing projects, including teaching the children and staff members more about the environment.
